Despite what some may think, video games are art, not to mention a lot of fun. If you’re trying to get your children or your stubborn boyfriend to an art museum, this is the exhibition you should bring them to. The Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery proudly present “The Art of Video Games.” It won’t be on exhibit until March 16, 2012 but it’s never to early to plan. Especially since it will only run until September 30 of that same year.
It’s one of the first ever exhibitions to delve deep into the artistic beauty that makes up forty years of glorious video game history. It will definitely be a journey from the first pioneers to groundbreaking, contemporary designers and artists. It will also delve into the inspiration as well as the influence this form of art. Video games really aren’t that much different from a film. They need to develop a story; they need to be engaging and captivating. There will be eighty games featured, both through image still and video footage. Five games will be playable.
If you don’t live in the D.C. area, the best way to get there is by charter bus of course. Gather up the kids and the hardcore video gamers on the charter bus because this will be one even you won’t want to miss.
