A popular summer resort known for its great mansions, Newport became a haven for the rich in the mid-nineteenth century when wealthy southern planters began to build impressive summer “cottages” on the now-famous Bellevue Avenue. By the early twentieth century, some of America’s wealthiest families were summering in Newport, including Vanderbilts, Astors and Widener families.

One of the most famous “cottages” is the Vanderbilts’ Breakers, an imposing residence on perfectly sculpted gardens featuring Japanese yew, Chinese juniper, and rare weeping beeches. The property, on a 13-acre estate, was completed in 1895. It cost $7 million to construct, which equates to approximately $150 million in today’s dollars.
